In this blog, I would like to discuss a project that we hope will lead to increased knowledge and assistance to patients and their family members who are dealing with a brain tumor diagnosis.  I have started an online video course to discuss brain tumors. These informal lectures are titled “Brain Tumors 101”.

The goal of these videos is to add some clarity to the extraordinarily complex and often abrupt exposure patient’s have of the new world of brain tumors. Unfortunately, it very difficult for a family member to have not only a new diagnosis of brain cancer but also to have to try and start negotiating how to deal with finding Centers of Excellence, finding the appropriate physicians, figuring out the implications of clinical trials, and basically just understanding what brain tumors are all about.

The treatments for brain tumors are often very difficult for patients to understand along with the involved multiple modalities of medical intervention such as surgery, radiation treatment, chemotherapy, and biologic therapies. This will be the goal of these lectures series… to break up a fairly complicated topic into small pieces that are manageable and can be seen and explained to help aid patient’s and their family members in getting through this process. Our ultimate goal is to try to add some reasonable knowledge base to the brain tumor patient and family community that will assist them in making decisions that can affect their outcome.
