A recent press release stated that for the first time Swiss researchers have successfully treated a part of a recurrent glioma noninvasively using focused ultrasound waves.

The use of focused ultrasound waves has been around for years for certain disorders such as kidney stones. However, based on radically new innovations of this technology developed by a company called InSightech, based out of Israel, this treatment modality is now available for use in the brain. Ongoing studies at our institution are looking at various applications of this treatment including ablation of areas of the brain that caused the essential tremor. In fact, Swedish Neurosciences Institute (SNI) in Seattle, Washington is one of the only centers on the West Coast to offer this technology and only one of three centers in the United States that will be enrolling patients with metastatic brain tumors. SNI is conducting a study that is examining whether noninvasive ultrasound helps contain tumor growth. Patients remain conscious throughout the process and respond to questions that guide treatment. This noninvasive method has shown potential to be an effective alternative to brain surgery and other more invasive therapies. Certainly more work will need to be done to prove the efficacy of this in the long term but we are very excited about the technology at this point.
